The Problem
And without being able to name it, you cannot develop it deliberately. You make work, some of it good, some not — but the thread connecting it all stays invisible. The resources that exist to help are not built for this.
01 — Articles & Blogs
Static questions printed on a page. You answer them, then interpret the answers yourself — which requires exactly the self-knowledge you are trying to build.
02 — Online Courses
Structured courses weave voice development through a long curriculum of technique and exercises. Valuable for sustained growth — but not a diagnostic tool you can use today.
03 — Style Quizzes
Generic personality-test shortcuts that assign you a category label. They tell you almost nothing useful about your specific practice, your real subject, or your growing edge.
04 — Human Mentors
The most valuable option — and the least accessible. An experienced eye on your work and an honest conversation is irreplaceable. But it requires access, money, and geography.
How It Works
The best personality assessments — Hogan, NEO, MBTI at its most rigorous — work by asking indirect, behavioural questions rather than "describe yourself." This questionnaire uses the same principle applied to visual art.
Share 1–10 works that feel representative. The tool analyses each one client-side for light quality, colour temperature, tonal range, mark energy, and compositional tendency. This shapes the questions you receive.
Across 7 dimensions: what you chase, how you see, how you make, what you feel, what you paint, where you come from, and what you believe. Questions are behavioural and indirect — designed to surface what you know below the level of conscious articulation.
Not pattern-matching — genuine analytical reasoning. It scores your drive, your maker type, your emotion gap, detects contradictions between answers, and reads your own words back to you as evidence.
Eight sections of specific written analysis: your voice signature, what the work is really about, your visual language, emotional register, strengths, growing edge, a 6-practice development plan, and your voice in one sentence.
Your Profile
Nothing generic. Every section is built from your actual answers — your feared thing, your avoided subject, your childhood memory, your own "I am an artist who..." sentence.
A portrait of your voice as it currently stands — what makes it distinctly yours, integrating emotional territory, subject tendency, image data, and your self-description.
Not the stated subject — the underlying preoccupation. Your childhood memory, avoided subject, and reason for painting are read together to find the true subject beneath.
A precise account of your vocabulary of light, colour, mark, edge, and tone — including where your image analysis and your described process align and where they contradict.
The feeling-world your paintings actually inhabit — honest about the gap between what you intend emotionally and what arrives in the work, including the fear underneath the making.
Four specific assets drawn from the actual evidence of your answers — not flattery, but genuine capacities that define your current voice and must be protected as you develop.
Three honest tensions in your current practice — where the voice is straining against its limits and what the work seems to want that it is not yet finding. Direct, not gentle.
Six specific practices derived from your answers: painting the avoided subject, a pace counterpoint, a precision influence study, the childhood memory, the feared painting, and the body of work review.
A single precise sentence — built partly from your own words — that names your voice as it stands today. The sentence many painters spend years trying to find.
"Style is the costume. Voice is the person wearing it. Most tools help you find the costume. This one tries to find the person."

Questions
Do I need to upload paintings?
No — painting upload is optional. If you upload work, the tool analyses it for light, colour, tone, and mark character, and this shapes some of the questions you receive. Without images, you still get the full questionnaire and a complete profile. The profile is richer with images but entirely valid without them.
How long does it take?
Most people take 20–30 minutes. There is no time limit — you can pause and return to it. The more honest and considered your answers, the more specific and useful the profile will be. Rushing through produces generic output.
Is it genuinely personalised or just templates?
It is genuinely personalised. The profile engine scores your answers across multiple dimensions, detects contradictions between them, and uses your actual words — your fear, your avoided subject, your childhood memory, your "I am an artist who..." sentence — as the raw material of the profile. No two profiles will be the same. What you will not get is AI-generated prose, because the tool works entirely offline.
Are my paintings and answers stored anywhere?
Your images are processed locally using the Canvas API and never leave your device. Your answers exist only in browser memory for the duration of the session. We store your email address (entered at the start) so we can send you your profile link — nothing else. We do not sell or share your email.
I have been making work for years. Is this for beginners?
It is designed specifically for artists who already have a practice and want to understand it more clearly — not for beginners finding their feet. The questions assume you make work regularly and are genuinely trying to develop. The more experience you have, the more the contradictions and tensions the tool identifies will resonate.
How is this different from a standard personality test?
Standard personality tests (MBTI, Big Five, etc.) measure stable traits across all domains of life. This tool is purpose-built for painting practice — the dimensions it measures (maker type, emotion gap, subject vehicle, compulsion vs choice) are specific to how artists work and what determines the character of their output. The question design follows the same indirect, behavioural methodology used in the most accurate personality assessments, applied to a domain those tests do not address.
The questionnaire takes 20–30 minutes. The profile it produces takes years to earn any other way. Free, immediate, no sign-up required.
